South Dakota Goldback Designs: A Symphony of Liberty and Pride
In the world of precious metals, where currency becomes a canvas for artistry and storytelling, the South Dakota Goldback Designs emerge as radiant masterpieces. This series release signifies a remarkable milestone, representing the fifth region of Goldback Designs released since Goldback Inc.'s inception in 2019. It showcases not only stunning aesthetics but also a profound tapestry of symbolism that captures the spirit and heritage of South Dakota.
Five years ago, when Goldback Inc. embarked on its journey, the founders could hardly have foreseen the magnificent trajectory that awaited. Perhaps they dreamt of two or three additional designs, but today they stand both proud and humbled, having gifted five sets of designs in as many years to five deserving locations. It's a testament to the enduring fascination with gold that can be spent—a currency that transcends its material worth.
Annette Anthony, the creative visionary behind a previous series, returns to guide the artistic direction of these captivating designs. Her creative brilliance infuses each piece with life and meaning, and the anticipation for future releases of her artwork is palpable.
Let us now journey to the 50 Goldback Denomination of South Dakota, where we encounter Libertas, the embodiment of liberty and freedom. Libertas always graces the 50 Goldback Denomination, serving as the capstone Virtue for locations in the United States.
In this South Dakota Series Design, Libertas draws inspiration from the iconic Lady Freedom statue in Washington, D.C., carrying forward the symbolism of that venerable representation. She wields a bare sword in her right hand, poised before a shield in her left. Both are elevated, signifying her unwavering readiness to safeguard her realm. The shield proudly bears her name, accompanied by a depiction of the South Dakota flag's radiant sun. Above and below, the inscription "Under God the People Rule" echoes South Dakota's state motto. Her crested helmet, along with her shield and sword, draws from symbols commonly associated with the Roman goddesses Minerva and Bellona.
At the feet of Liberty lies the skull of an American bison, adorned with the Lakota Sioux Medicine Wheel—a powerful symbol representing all the native peoples of South Dakota, including the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota. The circular shape and the directional lines and feathers embody hope and healing for those who seek it. The bison's skull also symbolizes the sacred nature of this magnificent creature's life, historically given to sustain others and utilized in its entirety to become the source of life for many. These symbols rest upon a depiction of a freesia flower cluster, a symbol of peace, friendship, and innocence.
Beneath Libertas, a poignant scene unfolds—a person fishing for walleye, South Dakota's state fish, against the backdrop of the majestic cliffs and water of Palisades State Park. Behind Liberty's right shoulder, the South Dakota State Capitol takes center stage, with the iconic Needles formations in the Black Hills, within Custer State Park, gracing the horizon. Above her, an embodiment of Mount Rushmore proudly proclaims South Dakota as the home of this monumental symbol of American freedom and hope. Surrounded by these powerful symbols, Libertas issues her timeless call to action: "Stand Fast in Liberty."
The South Dakota 50 Goldback Denomination transcends mere currency. It is a work of art that weaves together the strands of liberty, heritage, and the enduring spirit of a great state. It is a reminder that freedom is both a gift and a responsibility, to be cherished and defended by all who call South Dakota their home. These designs are a testament to the enduring values that South Dakotans hold dear—freedom, hope, and the indomitable spirit of liberty.
